SANTA MONICA – For Minerva Aquino, who has worked at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center for 27 years and been a union member since 2003, this strike is nothing new – it’s her fourth so far, she said.

SANTA MONICA – German Gil, a pharmacy technician who has worked at the UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center for five years, said he became involved with the union in March to learn about his employee rights.

SANTA MONICA – A certified nursing assistant who spoke to the crowd outside the UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center said they joined the protest in solidarity because the UC has been running the hospital “into the ground” while union employees have kept the hospital running.

SANTA MONICA – Around 150 people, many of them AFSCME Local 3299 members, are picketing around the UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, ringing cowbells and blasting sirens from megaphones.

The SJP at UCLA demonstrations today came ahead of a strike from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 – a union representing patient care, service and skilled craft workers.

While Trump – who is three electoral votes away from claiming the presidency, according to AP projections – has not been consistent on his stance on abortion, several state-level Constitutional changes were on the ballot this year, said Cathren Cohen, a staff attorney at the Center on Reproductive Health, Law and Policy at UCLA Law.

Measure G, which among other things proposed an expansion of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors from five to nine members and the creation of a county executive position, has around 8,000 more votes rejecting it than approving it, said Zev Yaroslavsky, a former member of the board.

With different outlets calling races at different times, it’s interesting to see how certain networks’ commentary overtly favors specific candidates, said Tim Groeling, a professor of communication and former member of the ASUCLA Communications Board – which publishes the Daily Bruin.

As results continue to be called, UCLA will be providing resources for students to navigate these experiences, such as debrief sessions for students living on the Hill, said Maia Ferdman – the deputy director of the Bedari Kindness Institute, which manages the UCLA Dialogue Across Difference initiative.
